BTEC Advanced Award in Seed Conservation Science

BTEC iAdvanced Award in Seed Conservation ScienceDescription of the Course

This Level 3 BTEC Advanced Award in Seed Conservation for The Royal Botanic Gardens, Wakehurst Place is designed to specifically address the global challenge of educating people around the world of the importance of plants to our ecosystem.

The qualification will equip individuals with the knowledge and understanding of the skills employed by scientists working on the important task of seed conservation. Aimed at students aged 16-18 the BTEC qualification complements topics addressed in the A Level Biology syllabus. The practical tasks and activities contained in the courseware encourage students to discover how scientists in different countries undertake seed collection and conservation, undertake wider research in the field and form links with science students in other countries studying similar topics.
The course content has been created by scientists and educators at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Wakehurst Place, home of the global Millennium Seed Bank Project. The learning material provides opportunities for students to learn from these leading experts in plant conservation and research.

School workshops

RBG, Wakehurst Place offers schools licensed to use the courseware the opportunity to undertake assessment opportunities for the course at the Millennium Seed Bank. The teacher guidance for the qualification suggests how schools may like to work with the courseware before and after the ideal scenario, a practical science workshop visit to Wakehurst Place or other centre of excellence. Further information is available from the Education Department at Wakehurst Place. However, it is recognised that many schools will not be able to travel to West Sussex so the material has been designed to be delivered in school as part of the A Level curriculum. The BTEC course is designed to take 30 guided learning hours of study.
Schools licenced by Londonlearning to use the courseware are permitted to use the materials with different age groups. Courseware can be downloaded from Londonlearning to a school’s Intranet or installed from a CD-ROM.

Students wishing to be assessed for the qualification must register through their schools with Edexcel through Londonlearning. Details are available at www.London-learning.com Schools must keep an electronic file of student’s completed tasks and activities and internally assess that all tasks are completed. Londonlearning will administer an online test as part of the assessment. A candidate fee is charged for sitting the online exam.
