BTEC Intermediate Award in ICT

This interactive online course allows students and adults to learn at their own pace how to correctly apply skills in Microsoft Office applications in an education context. It helps other subject teachers to deliver ICT without having to teach the IT skills themselves. Students engage with the courseware to develop their abilities and demonstrate their competency across the curriculum. Centres can offer the course to families of students and the wider community online or in a classroom environment.

Description of the Course

The BTEC Intermediate Award in ICT (online) is designed particularly to meet the needs of senior school pupils age 13-16 in International and Independent Schools and Colleges. The interactive course equips individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for future success in advanced secondary education, future employment, or for entry to a BTEC National or A/AS level in Information Technology or related title.

It offers students a specialised route into further ICT study and reflects university and industry needs for desired ICT skills. Its unique selling point is that it has been designed by IT teachers to involve non-IT teachers in its delivery in the school curriculum.

Learners can work at their own pace, engaging with the animated tutor and interacting with the courseware.

Developed and trialled at Dulwich College, the implementation and teaching of ICT across the curriculum is supported by this new online course. It has been designed by IT staff with a good working knowledge and experience of the wider curriculum programmes. This is underpinned by the relationship of the units. They move from knowledge and understanding of IT to the ability to practically apply ICT skills in other curriculum areas.

Aims of the Course
The BTEC Intermediate Award in ICT (online) is designed to meet the following aims:

To be an internationally recognised qualification;
To provide online studies in the fields of computing and IT that are directly relevant to the changing needs of students, universities and employers;
To provide a programme of online study which is intellectually challenging;
To develop in students a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes which are essential for career development in the computing and technology sector;
To support schools and colleges with high quality, blended learning IT courseware;
To reduce the burden of assessment on students and schools;
To provide an education that forms a good basis for progression to post-16 advanced level courses;
To underpin the existing and projected National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in Information Technology
To provide students with knowledge and skills which are relevant to the QCA Key Skills units.
